Should Lawyers Blog? 10 Reasons To Start Blogging Now

Should Lawyers Blog?  Yes!  Including ten reasons why Lawyers should start blogging now.  If you want to grow your practice and increase your presence on the internet, blogging is a fantastic way to take your business to the next level.

1).  You can participate a social community of your peers - Lawyers are starting to blog and there are many interesting topics to blog about that do not put client confidentiality at risk.  Law blogs such as Above the Law have been very successful, now ranking as high on Google as major news sites (PR6).  Reading other blogs can give you unlimited topics to discuss on your own blog.

2).  Blogging is an opportunity to engage with people who need legal services - Blogging can reach customers/clients in your area of expertise and you can use Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and Twitter to extend your blog and discussions.

3).  Blogging can help you share your services and expertise -  Do you have services that are unique or specialized (bicycle accidents, mesothelioma, DWI, etc)? Use your blog and your blog name to share your expertise.  Using your key words in your blog title is recommended.

4).  Showcase your accomplishments - Have you won a major case?  Is there a new law in your practice area that is worth communicating?  Share it!

5).  Tap new markets to grow your business - Expand the niche you advertise in and grow your target demographics. You can use your blog to reach new audiences.

6).  Blogging will bring clients and peers to your web site to view your credentials and testimonials - Share your background and expertise and let clients know what other clients say about your law firm.

7).  Creating a blog is very inexpensive and can be FREE! You can set up a blog on Blogger, Live Journal, or Wordpress for no charge.

8).  Setting up a blog is easy - You can either set up individual blogs on Blogger, Live Journal, or Wordpress or you can add a blog on your existing web site to dramatically increase traffic to your site.  A WordPress site can be added to your website for as little as $100.  Deliverable Based Consulting does small projects for blog installations.

9).  Blogging will increase your website back links to improve search engine results - I have seen law firm sites go from PR1 to PR4 as a result of blogging.  One recommended approach is to add social bookmarking tools on each blog entry so you can send your blog content to Twitter, Facebook, Stumble Upon, and other social networking sites to further drive traffic to your site.

10).  Get found on search engines under more keywords! - After setting up a blog on your home page, you will see hundreds of new keywords added with very little effort.  You can even set up tools on a WordPress site to auto-tag keywords without any extra effort.

Free Customizable Wordpress Law Theme

After trying out several law blog templates, I have found a favorite.  The free Graphene template has every WordPress feature imaginable.  This template is easy to customize for a law theme.  you can download it directly from WordPress here.  The Graphene 1.3 template was created by Syahir Hakim.

Once you download the template and upload the file to your wp-content>themes folder on your web site, you can login to WordPress and select appearance>themes to activate.  To customize the header so something more applicable to law, login to your blog and select appearance>themes>header in the left hand navigation menu to view the options.

I like to change the header to the white background so you can customize the header and re-upload.  To view the original header images, just navigate to your original download file under grahene>images>headers and select fluid.jpg for the white background.  Once you download the header, you can update and then go back to appearance>themes>header to upload the new version.

Including a live example below:

The description includes: "The Graphene theme for WordPress is a stylish, neat, and tight WordPress theme supporting configurable columns layout options and 4 widget areas, with the ability to determine the number of columns to display in the footer widget area."

black, blue, white, one-column, two-columns, three-columns, right-sidebar, left-sidebar, fixed-width, custom-colors, custom-header, custom-background, custom-menu, editor-style, theme-options, threaded-comments, sticky-post, translation-ready, rtl-language-support.

How to Get Started with Social Media | Twitter and Blogger for Lawyers

Are you an attorney or business professional looking to get started using social media?  With little or no technical expertise, you can set up a blog and a Twitter account and begin your journey into social media.  This venture will not only introduce you to new content to educate you on your field or area of interest, it can help you grow your business by attracting people to your site.

Get a Free Blog:

You can easily sign up for a free blog such as Blogger.com and build your first blog site with their easy to follow wizard.  You can set up a blog in less than an hour.  Once your in design mode, you can create your arrangement, color scheme, and easily add news feeds, videos, and links to your website.

My favorite Blogger gadgets include the video bar and the newsreel.  The video bar can pull in content from YouTube and Google Videos.  Video content makes your blog more interactive and may inspire you to create your own video showcasing your business.  If you don't have your own videos to showcase, you can show top videos or other channels.  There is always something to watch on YouTube.  I like the newsreel gadget because you can pull in your favorite topics from major news sources without any coding.  All you do is add your key words (law, divorce, etc.).  In as little as 15 minutes, you have hot topics streaming in and  this will give you more content to talk about on your blog, website, and even Twitter.

Get Started on Twitter:

Twitter is another free social media tool and sign up only takes a couple minutes.  To get started on Twitter,  search on the topics you are interested in and follow other Twitter users.  Once you start following others and sending quality tweets, people will begin to follow you.  Some people are challenged to see the usefulness of Twitter.  At the end of the day, it's another vehicle to talk to people and understand what others are talking about.  If your passionate about a specific topic, it's a great way to connect with others who share your passion.  You can tweet about your business, or you can just share interesting stories.  Twitter is a great place to meet new people and learn about content that is relevant to your business or personal interests.  Once you have relevant content from your blog, you can begin to tweet your comments about interesting events or share your own blog updates.

If you want to get started with social media in under an hour, you can get your first blog and tweet underway and take your online marketing to the next level.  Good luck!
